Notice of Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Standard Motor Club will take place on Sunday April 15

at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon.

The Heritage Motor Centre is on the B4100 just north of M40 junc. 12. We will have a reserved parking area. Members and their guests will be directed to the Lecture Room where stickers will be distributed. These entitle you to free admission to the museum. This is conditional on your attendance at the AGM. Those not attending the meeting should pay the normal admission price. There is a restaurant in the Heritage Motor Centre for meals at lunchtime.

10am Assemble for the road run at Sainsbury’s Canley, Coventry, junction of Vanguard avenue and Herald Avenue, CV4 9BJ, at the heart of the old Standard factory site just off the A45. Refreshments available in the store cafe. Road run organised by Steve O’Hara. 0121 708 2813.

The New Forest Group of the Standard Motor Club will be organising an event run.

Classic Car Show

The Theme of the Standard Motor Club's stand is a the record-breaking run

from Capetown to Tangiers s in 1958, which was a proving run for the

protoype Triumph Herald, to be launched in 1959. That's 9650 miles mostly

on

unmade roads through jungle and across the Sahara. All five cars on the

run

made it successfully to the destination.

The support vehicles were a Standard Atlas Caravanette, A Standard 10

Companion Estate car and a Phase 3 Vanguard Estate Car. There were two

Herald prototypes, a Saloon and a Coupé. What is most remarkable is that,

with the exception of the Vanguard, all the other cars had identical engines

of just 948ccs! All the cars were built in the Standard-Triumph factory at
Canley, Coventry.

Examples of the Vanguard, Companion and Atlas will all be on our stand all

weekend, along with a Triumph Herald. Lack of space prevents us from

displaying a second Herald. The Club will be showing film of the event and

books describing the run will be available for purchase.

The Standard Motor Club caters for all Standards from 1903 to 1963 and

currently has a membership of 800

CONCORDE CLASSIC CAR SHOW

Organised by the Concorde Classic team, the Wessex Ferrari Club and Naomi House Childrens’ Hospice who were to benefit to the tune of £3200. This was twice last years
Having attended last years show TOPPER the SCARECROW was delighted to be invited back again this time with the NEW FOREST GROUP of the SMC.
Topper arrive first in STAN the 1939 Standard Flying Eight Tourerand parked up with the Standard Motor Club sail hoisted.
He was soon joined by Dave & Val Salter in their 1934 Standard 10 Tickford Bodied DHC
And
Tony & Pat Mansbridge in their 1934 standard 10 saloon
Over 400 classics were present( incl Ferrari, racing cars, Lamborghinis etc .)
Over 2000 paid to see the show.
To his delight Topper was asked to open the Show.

51^st Annual Standard International Rally

Wyboston Lakes, on the Cambridgeshire/ Bedfordshire borders on June 25th to June 27th 2010

The campus-type venue has a flat rally field and associated accommodation to make up a perfect weekend. The proposed itinerary will be familiar to anyone who attended the Golden Jubilee weekend at Cirencester, and one can attend on just one, two, or all three days, as usual. On Friday evening there will be a short roadrun incorporating a licensed buffet stop and return before darkness. On Saturday there will be a longer, but leisurely roadrun to a large Motor Museum, followed by a silver service evening dinner at Wyboston. The Static Rally will take place on Sunday on the lawn at Wyboston

Those able to attend for the whole weekend will benefit from discounted on-site "4 star" b&b accommodation, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday if required.

Set in 350 acres of countryside, there is no other centre quite like Wyboston Lakes, providing a tranquil and relaxing environment The high standards of accommodation, and superb food are combined with the facilities and service expected of a good quality hotel. The centre has over 400 comfortable, en-suite double/twin bedrooms with complimentary wi-fi internet access. Complimentary hot drinks are available to our guests all day. Their bars also feature real ales.

The 18 hole golf course and onsite leisure and water sports facilities provide a full range of wet and dry activities for all the family. Rally participants have complimentary access to the on-site pool and leisure centre.

Although it is hoped that members will take full advantage of the inclusive facilities on offer, provision has also been made on the site for Motorhomes and Caravans. Well controlled dogs on leads are welcomed on site but not in the centre's buildings.

This venue is a high quality Corporate Conference and Training Centre during the week. As these facilities are little used at weekends, the Club has been able to negotiate heavily discounted and highly competitive prices for the event. With its easily accessibility, central location and its delightful lakeside setting, Wyboston Lakes is ideal for the venue.

The Standard Motor Club cordially invites you to the 51st Annual Standard International Rally on 25th - 27th June 2010.

The Venue is Wyboston Lakes, a Conference Centre on the Great River Ouse, on the Cambs/Bedford border. Participants can attend for just one day, but the rally entrance fee allows then to attend for one, two or all three days. All Standards are welcomed as well as non-Standards in our Open Class.

If members just wish to attend the static rally, that will take place on the Sunday 27th on the "lawn" at Wyboston. As in previous years, if members wish to make a longer break, events will start on Friday evening with a short road-run incorporating a buffet meal, before returning to Wyboston before dark. Remember it is mid-summer and dusk will be late and the weather fine!

Saturday sees a longer roadrun on a round trip to a major Motor Museum, home to 350 vehicles, including some Standards in captivity. A lunch stop will be incorporated. Saturday evening will be the Rally Dinner in a restaurant and bar on-site at Wyboston.

On Sunday, the cars will gather on a large flat lawn. There will be self-judging in the Standard Classes and prizes for all the winning cars, including other marques. There will be onfield catering, traders and members are invited to bring their own spares to sell or swap. The afternoon will conclude with a prizegiving.

Accommodation is available in en-suite rooms of a 4 star standard (our building actually has no star rating as it is a conference centre, not a hotel). As the facility is little used at weekends, we have negotiated a very advantageous rate for these rooms, which normally retail at £140 per night during the week. Our rate will be £65 per double or twin en-suite room, bed and full English breakfast. The rooms include TV/Radio, alarm, trouser press, ironing board and iron, coffee and tea making facilities and Wifi Internet Access. Complimentary on-site gym and pool access is included. Rooms are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night if required.

For those not requiring hotel accommodation, there is provision for a limited number of Motorhomes and Caravans on site. 24-hour toilet access in the main building will be available. Pitches will be £15 per night. Dogs are allowed on site but must be on a lead as this is a Nature Reserve. They are not allowed in the Conference Centre buildings. Camping is not available on site but there is a campsite nearby on the banks of the Great River Ouse.

We hope that as many members as possible will join us for what promises to be the highlight of the year, though attendance at any of the events is entirely optional. An independent review of Wyboston by one of our members includes the following words:

"We were delighted that the organisers of the 2010 International Rally have discovered Wyboston Lakes Country Club. We recently organised a classic vehicle event there for the other car club we support.

The facilities provide excellent overnight secure parking well away from busy areas in an area of the car park very near the accommodation block. This has both CCTV coverage and floodlighting and we negotiated a reserved block for our classic cars.

The rooms are quite well appointed and should satisfy most people. They are quiet and located well away from any on site event facilities. The bar prices are normal and certainly not loaded. The usual wide choice was available for breakfast and dinner was a carvery style event with vegetarian options. The food was well presented and the support staff were very efficient.

If you like a little exercise, then the gym and pool facilities are most enjoyable.

Finally, the staff were excellent and the management delivered all that they promised so we can fully recommend this venue to our members for a relaxed and worry-free weekend."

Help an unfortunate Standard 8 owner
Front wing stolen whilst member ill in hospital

How low can some people stoop? A Standard 8 owner was recently ill in hospital and whilst there his garage was burgled. The despicable thieves took the front nearside wing of his Standard 8.
We are sure that we all sympathise with the victim of this appallingly mean crime. The Club will try to help.
If you are offered, or know of anyone trying to sell a Standard 8 nearside wing, chances are it will be this one. Please report the seller to the police so that it can be checked out, or EMAIL webmaster@standardmotorclub.org.uk and he will do it. We will also be watching ebay.
If you are the thief, look to your conscience and return the part. If you don't, chances are that someone in the Club will find you. We are on your case.

Following on from what we hope will be a successful day out at Standedge Tunnel on 13^th September we are considering our next run which is proposed to be to the Jodrell Bank Telescope near Macclesfield. Not only is the technology and use of the telescope interesting but there is a 3d theatre show which includes a virtual visit to Mars. You may not also be aware that there is a 35 acre Arboretum containing some 2000 different types of trees which on our proposed visit date should be quite spectacular with the autumn change of colour in the leaves. The entry cost is a reasonable £2 but a group discount could be arranged depending on numbers. There is an extra charge of £1 for the 3d theatre showing.

The Golf Club is to be found just off the A452 Kenilworth to Stonebridge Road between Balsall Common and the Hampton in Arden road. How to get to the most important Standard Event of the Year:
The Royal Agricultural College, venue for this year's International Rally on 26th-28th June, is superbly located on the outskirts of Cirencester in the heart of the Cotswolds. The College is easily accessible by car, train and coach and from most parts of the UK. For visitors using Satellite Navigation, the College postcode is GL7 6JS.
By Car
The following suggested routes avoid motorways. Consult a Map for details
From the North, Birmingham
Take A435 towards Redditch, then A46 towards Evesham. A44 towards Oxford. Right onto A424 towards Stow on the Wold. Turn right on A429 (Fosse Way) to Cirencester.
From the East and London -
Take A40 to Beaconsfield, High Wycombe, Stokenchurch, Oxford then Burford, After Burford, turn left on B4425 to Cirencester.
From the South East and Sailsbury

The organisers of the 50th National of the Standard Motor Club have announced that Nick Black, youngest son of Sir John and Lady Black, has accepted an invitation to the Golden Anniversary Rally
26th to 28th July 2009
at The Royal Agricultural College
Cirencester Gloucestershire GL7 6JS
Sir John was MD of the Standard Motor Company from 1933 to the mid 1950's. Nick will at the rally that weekend and will present the prizes on Sunday afternoon. Come along and meet him.

Have you seen a scarecrow driving around in a little blue car?

Well if you were in the King’s Somborne Romsey Stockbridge area over the last few weeks you may have seen him.

The Scarecrow in the little blue car was being filmed for the launch of a new series of children’s stories by local author Darrell Cunningham (aged 61).

The series of stories will be called THE ADVENTURES OF STAN and are about a magical little blue car called STAN and his friend Scarecrow.

On the first of December 2008 Darrell Cunningham (Publicity Officer) will be launching the first three stories of a series of adventures for Children.

Called “THE ADVENTURES OF STAN” about a little blue car.

The car is based on Darrell’s own 1939 Standard Flying Eight Tourer.

The stories at first will be only available on the internet FREE to download at

Event Information for ' Standard 50th International Rally'

Event Description: Set in the grounds of the Royal Agricultural College. Cirencester was one of the most important towns in Roman Britain and today is considered by many to be the Capital of the Cotswolds.

Assembling on the Friday afternoon. In the evening there will be a 23 mile drive through the local area, this will include a visit to AV8 Restaurant, Kemble Airfield, where drivers will enjoy a pre booked buffet supper, returning to the College before nightfall.

Saturday: Approx. 50 mile drive through the Cotswolds, a lunchtime halt will be in the village of Bourton on the Water. The cars will park a short distance from the Motor Museum at the Royal British Legion Hall. Nearby Cotswold Motor Museum is well worth a visit and includes a 1947 Standard 8 in their collection. For other member of the family who may not share the same interest in motor cars, there is the Model Village, Birdland or local shops each well worth a visit. A variety of eating establishments are available depending on individual requirements.

Sunday is Static Rally and display day. The Concours d’elegance judging in ten classes. Sorry no dogs allowed. Starbucks Coffee Shop open all day for light refreshments.

Organiser Information: Club caters for enthusiasts and owners of products of the Standard Motor Company of Canley, Coventry, England, which were built from 1903 to 1963. As a multinational company, cars were produced and sold in most of the world's markets. The Standard Motor Company bought the Triumph car company in 1945 and all post war Triumph cars were designed and made by the Standard Motor Company in Standard factories. Whilst many are familiar with Triumph cars, the parent company's products and the Standard marque generally has largely been ignored, except by owners. One of the club's aims is to change that, highlight the cars' qualities and give them the recognition they deserve.
